Biography

Research, Activism and Strategy

Sabrina Fernandes was born in Goiânia, Brazil, in 1988. She has a PhD in Sociology and a Master's in Political Economy from Carleton University, Canada. She was the Head of Research at the Alameda Institute, created to foster engaged and critical research on a transition away from an age of catastrophe, and is currently appointed as their Senior Leadership Fellow. She is also a Senior Research Advisor to the Technology & Industrialisation for Development (TIDE) centre at the University of Oxford. Recently, she was a fellow with the Center for Advanced Latin American Studies at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico; a fellow of the International Research Group on Authoritarianism and Counter-Strategies of the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, with senior research appointments at the University of Brasília, University of Vienna and Freie Universität Berlin; and a Scientific Resident at the Institute of Advanced Ideas of Unicamp in Brazil.

She has geared her activist, research and publishing work in recent years towards fighting depoliticisation and advancing efforts towards a just and internationalist ecological transition. She pioneered the digital communication project Tese Onze (Thesis Eleven), bridging academic research and activist communication, with over 400,000 subscribers across different online platforms and media output, including podcast and book club. She was a contributing editor at Jacobin Magazine, served as head consulting editor for Jacobin Brasil, and participates regularly in interviews and articles in a variety of outlets of broad readership, in addition to her role as a public speaker in several countries.

Her first book, Sintomas Mórbidos, on political fragmentation in Brazil, came out in 2019 by Autonomia Literária; her second book, Se quiser mudar o mundo, an introduction to radical politics, is already in its seventh printing by Editora Planeta. She is also responsible for new editions — with original introductions and notes — of Marx and Engels' Communist Manifesto and Marx's The 18th Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte in Brazil. Her books and articles span multiple fields and can be found in English, Portuguese, Spanish and other languages.

She is an activist with the Ecosocial Pact from the South, a member of the editorial committee of the NACLA Report, and a monthly columnist for The Intercept Brasil. She currently works as a researcher and strategist through the Alameda Institute and through Gaiacenic, her consultancy and curatorship company. Her latest project, Intertese, will be launched to the public at the end of 2026.
